Sand Casting Workshop

Get hands-on with the magic of metal in this immersive sand casting workshop! This workshop will provide participants with an introduction to basic two-part mold sand casting. Each participant will get the opportunity to create their own custom mold using plant leaves they brought from home to create decorative light switch covers. After shaping and preparing their molds, participants will witness the exciting process of molten aluminum being poured, transforming their designs into solid metal pieces right before their eyes! This workshop will take place outside. Shading and tents will be provided, but make sure to wear weather-appropriate clothes, sunscreen and sunglasses.
FOR AGES 18+
Bring tree leaves! All other supplies will be provided by the instructor. No experience is needed.
ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Will Hoffman is a sculptor based in Williamsburg, Virginia. Having received his training in fine art and sculpture from Buffalo State University, he works in cast, fabricated, and found metals in bronze, aluminum, steel, and iron. His work encompasses both figurative and contemporary styles. He has nearly 25 years of foundry experience making and pouring metal into ceramic shell and sand molds utilizing crucible and cupola furnaces. Will’s sculptures have been shown nationally and internationally with his work on permanent exhibition at Pedvāle Open-Air Museum and Sculpture Park in Sabile, Latvia, at Buffalo State University, Buffalo, New York, Griffis Sculpture Park in East Otto, New York, and in Williamsburg, Virginia
